A History of Farming
Previous Generations
Our family has a long-standing commitment to farming, carrying on the legacy of our predecessors. They devoted themselves to raising cattle, focusing on the prestigious purebred Herefords.
A New Beginning
As we transitioned our focus to sheep farming, we sought a breed that mirrored the resilience and characteristics of the Hereford cattle. After careful consideration, we found that the North Country Cheviot was the most suitable option available to us.
Our Flock
Between 2000 and 2020, we successfully managed a flock of 200 Purebred North Country Cheviots. By implementing pasture rotation, we ensured that the sheep remained outdoors throughout the year, only bringing them inside during the lambing season. This approach was more convenient for us, as we discovered it became increasingly difficult to catch the lambs shortly after they were born.
Protection
In our region, coyotes posed a significant threat. To combat this issue, we brought in Great Pyrenees dogs. After their introduction, we experienced no further losses among our sheep.
Hired Help
The North Country Cheviots are known for their spirited temperament, which can present certain handling challenges.
Thankfully, our dependable Border Collie was always available to lend a helping paw.
Today
In 2024, we have fully integrated ourselves into the vibrant community of PEI.
Currently, we are collaborating with our neighbor and maintaining our commitment to sustainable pasture management through rotational grazing practices.
